If we can have a body which defines and ensures the standards of engineering for Electrical, Mechanical and so many other engineering. I am wondering why is it that software engineering can’t receive a similiar treatment?

I know that many will argue saying that we have processes like CMMi, RUP, DOD and others.

My answer: Thats exactly the problem! We dont have one standard, rather we have a range of standards, and no standard body to regulate it!

Even organizations like IASA(which I a member of) can’t dictate a standard, because there are so many other orgs like these, and not one has been given the authority.

I guess the problem since software was always a supplementary services to a manual process or a hardware. So whats so important about software?
Why does the world need a Software Engineering Institute?
