It was a proud moment for me when I read that UTM has announced in papers (TheStar) on Sunday that it has got the Research University, and is among the top 5 in the country.

Being a ex UTM (Skudai) student, I have always thought that UTM has provided me a good basic education what has led me to where I am now.

But what was not so proud for me to read was what was the guideline which was being put in place to ensure that they stay at the top,

The deputy vice-chancellor of research and innovation Prof Dr Marzuki Khalid has stated that they will ensure that the production of the PhD holders are high!

Is that the measurement of a good university? To ensure that more people have got better “papers” ?

In my opinion, PhDs does not ensure the country’s growth. Valuable intellectual property (IP), which has got translated into a good commercialized product does.

Yes, you might argue saying that PhD holders are brilliant people can make things happen, I agree, but the University should provide the platform for IP creation and commercialization, and not let the IP life cycle hanging half way.

Hence the universities should be measured by how many products, technologies and even how many Malaysian Google, AT&T or Lucent has been created!

Not how many PhD papers has been given out…
